Public lecture held by the EU High Councilor for justice and prosecution from the Ministry of Justice, former Prosecutor General of Romania, Gabriela Scutea
"Standards regarding the Rule of Law: accents for the current state of justice functionality in the Republic of Moldova" was the generic of the public lesson held by the EU High Councilor for Justice and Prosecutor's Office from the Ministry of Justice, former Prosecutor General of Romania, Gabriela Scutea. The event, intended for INJ audiences, candidates for the positions of judge and prosecutor, took place on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at the National Institute of Justice.
During the public lesson, topics related to the rule of law, democracy and increasing the degree of accountability of actors in the justice sector in the Republic of Moldova were addressed. The EU High Counselor's expertise was focused on community standards and current trends in the jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the European Union and the European Court of Human Rights. Emphasis was placed on the importance of complying with the rules that contribute to increasing society's trust in judicial institutions and the promotion of a fair and transparent justice system, sensitive to respect for fundamental rights and democracy. References were also made to the Rule of Law Report which covers national justice systems, anti-corruption, media freedom and pluralism, as well as institutional checks and balances systems.
Present at the event, Ecaterina Popa, head of the Training and Research Directorate, thanked the EU High Councilor and noted that her intervention brought relevant and challenging perspectives, essential for the training of a generation of dedicated specialists in the field of justice, who have a distinct role in strengthening the rule of law in our country.
The audience had the opportunity to participate in discussions and share opinions regarding the evolution of the national judicial system recorded in the reform process, according to the conditions for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union.
